The Importance of Ergonomics

Most of our time is spent at work. The importance to stay healthy while at work is huge! Some workers in a variety of different industries and occupations can be exposed to risk factors at work, such as lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling heavy loads, working in awkward body postures and performing the same tasks repetitively. These risk factors can create Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) MSDs affect the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. However, work related MSDs can be prevented.

How do you ask? Ergonomics: An applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely- called also biotechnology, human engineering and human factors. The goal is to fit a job to a person and allow them to perform their daily tasks comfortably. Some examples of MSDs include but are not limited to are carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, rotator cuff injuries, trigger finger, muscle strains and low back injuries. So next time you’re at a desk all day, don’t forget to deskercise! Be sure to take mini breaks, take the stairs over the elevator and take a little walk on your lunch!
